Transit Oriented Development

Transit Oriented Development is urban planning that creates compact, pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods centered around public transit stations. The goal of Transit Oriented Development is to reduce car dependence and energy consumption, provide easy access to shops, work, green space and entertainment, and build healthy, close-knit communities. Transit Oriented Development also prioritizes bicycles and scooters by providing protected lanes, bikeshare networks, and ride-in parking areas.

By locating routes near public transportation, a broad range of local communities can easily participate—and CicLAvia entices people to go places they haven’t visited. (Copyright: ©Timothy Norris)
