Public Health and Recreation

Public Health and Recreation means using the built environment to support residents’ physical and mental well-being. Cities can promote public health and recreation by thoughtfully weaving parks, sports courts, fields, and trails into urban design. In addition to providing opportunities to exercise – such as soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and running/biking paths – communities can improve public health by providing access to restful, restorative green spaces and water features. Intramural sports leagues, youth sports programs and community activities like theatre, concerts and community events also build social capital and community resilience.
