Become a Broker
Real estate brokers oversee the buying, selling, and renting of real estate properties. They can market properties, write contracts, mediate conflict, handle finances, and manage real estate agents. Brokers can be self-employed or work for a real estate/brokerage firm.
Typical Tasks or Duties
Real estate brokers market, compare, and list properties for rent or sale. They meet with clients to show properties and provide financial guidance. Brokers can manage real estate agents and help mediate conflicts between clients and agents. They also prepare legal and financial documents and manage contracts.
Work Environment
Most real estate brokers hold a full-time schedule, while some may choose to work part time. Hours are typically irregular as they depend on showing times, events, and clients’ schedules. Brokers are often based in an office but spend time showing properties and meeting with clients.

Important Skills
- Business and marketing
- People skills and conflict resolution
- Ability to self-start and work independently
- Organized problem-solving
Consider pursuing brokerage if you have an entrepreneurial spirit and have an enthusiastic and charismatic personality.
Educational and Licensing requirements

Entry level positions typically require a high school diploma and passing state-accredited courses.
While a college degree is not required, it is common for brokers to have a bachelor’s degree in a field such as finance, business, or economics. Some colleges and universities also offer courses, certificates, and degrees in real estate.
All practicing brokers are required to be licensed. Licensing requirements vary by state, but typically include being over 18 years old, having a high school diploma, passing pre-licensing courses and a licensing exam, and having a certain number of years of real estate experience. Brokers need to complete continuing education to keep their license, which generally needs to be renewed every 2-4 years.
Internships to consider
Working closely with senior real estate agents or working under the sponsorship of a licensed broker.
Certifications
The National Association of Realtors (NAR) offers designations and certifications for licensed realtors. Designations require a fee along with membership, but certifications only require membership. Realtors can get these credentials in many areas such as land consulting, appraisal, and luxury homes.
