Become an Architect
An architect designs, plans, and sometimes oversees the construction of buildings and outdoor structures. They might work for a large architectural firm or as a sole practitioner, and alongside many other professionals including developers, engineers, contractors, and interior designers. Architects can specialize in one of seven types of architecture, including residential, landscape, and urban design.
Typical Tasks or Duties
Architects may draw plans and prepare specifications, draft and manage contracts, consult with clients to understand project visions, and visit construction sites. Architects can specialize in certain structures or work on a wide range of buildings. Some architects focus on historic preservation or environmental sustainability.
Work Environment
Architects typically work in an office environment on a full-time schedule with the potential for additional hours. They meet with clients, engineers, and other architects, and occasionally perform fieldwork at construction sites.

Educational requirements
Architects must complete a bachelor’s and/or master’s in architecture, a paid internship, and pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).
Undergraduate and master’s degrees in architecture are offered across the United States at Universities and accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Some educational programs are offered at schools not accredited by NAAB, but this will lead to additional restrictions and requirements when looking for careers and certifications.
Students can choose from various concentrations like architectural engineering, environmental design, architectural studies, building science, urban design, and landscape architecture.
Internships to consider
Architects must complete approximately 3 years of paid internships. This experience can come from working as an intern at an architectural firm, and some hours can also come from working at a non-architectural institution with direct supervision from a licensed architect or engineer, working at a construction or design company, or academic internships.
Certifications
All architects must pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). The National Council of Architecture Registration Boards (NCARB) offers an optional NCARB certification to become a registered architect. To maintain a license, states may hold different requirements, such as workshops and courses for continued education.
